The Monthly Case Webinar series, hosted by Dr. Imran Lasker, provides an excellent platform for radiologists and medical professionals to enhance their diagnostic skills. In this blog post, we'll dive into the key takeaways from the Monthly Case Webinar #15, which took place in July 2023.

The Power of Collaborative Learning

Dr. Imran Lasker, a consultant radiologist, has been conducting these webinars for quite some time, garnering positive feedback from participants. The webinar utilizes the Collective Minds Radiology platform, a robust tool that Dr. Lasker employs for all his teaching and lecturing needs.

"I actually use it myself for all my teaching and all my my lecturing that I do do it at 2B teaching as well it's all on here I use all of this," Dr. Lasker explains.

This collaborative approach allows for seamless sharing of cases and interactive discussions among participants.

Key Diagnostic Cases

1. Shoulder Dislocation

The webinar kicked off with a case of shoulder dislocation. Dr. Lasker emphasized the importance of examining multiple views before making a definitive diagnosis. He demonstrated how to assess the alignment of the humeral head with the glenoid fossa and check for associated injuries such as Hill-Sachs defects or Bankart lesions.

"Remember look someone hasn't had this at the blue right they haven't had this out of the blue it's it's generally um you only really gets or posted justifications or any sort of dislocations without any sort of trauma or impact if you're looking at a a a it's going to be like electrical electrocution or it's going to be like a fit."

2. Small Bowel Obstruction

Another intriguing case involved a CT scan of an older patient with abdominal pain. Dr. Lasker guided the participants through the process of identifying signs of small bowel obstruction, including dilated loops of small bowel and the "feces sign."

He stressed the importance of thoroughly examining the entire scan:

"The most commonly missed fracture is a second fracture because people think slam dunk I'm done I'm going home but actually there's a lot more going on than meets the iron right."

3. Pediatric Head Trauma

One of the more sobering cases involved a pediatric patient with a subdural hematoma. Dr. Lasker highlighted the significance of identifying acute-on-chronic hematomas and the potential implications for non-accidental injury (NAI) in such cases.

"If you've got a situation where you've got a like a subdural hematoma on multiple sides on like two sides and not also of different ages then you could be worried about like this may not just be a one-time accident this may be something that's like an accident happening again and again."

4. Cervical Spine Fracture

The webinar also covered a case of an older patient with a C1 fracture. Dr. Lasker demonstrated the importance of carefully examining every slice of a CT scan, even when the primary focus might be elsewhere.

"The last slice could have a fracture and that could slice your career in half couldn't it or less than that so you've got to be very very careful doing this game Radiology game."

Advanced Imaging Techniques

Throughout the webinar, Dr. Lasker shared valuable tips on optimizing image analysis:

  1. Using Maximum Intensity Projection (MIP) for fracture detection
  2. Adjusting window settings to highlight different tissue types
  3. Utilizing multiplanar reconstructions for a comprehensive view

The Importance of Continuous Learning

Dr. Imran Lasker emphasizes the importance of continuous learning and collaboration in radiology. These monthly webinars serve as an excellent opportunity for professionals to stay updated with the latest diagnostic techniques and challenging cases.

Conclusion

The Monthly Case Webinar #15 provided invaluable insights into various radiological cases, from common shoulder dislocations to more complex pediatric head traumas. By sharing these cases and fostering discussion, Dr. Lasker and the participants contribute to the collective knowledge of the radiology community.

As we continue to advance in medical imaging, platforms like Collective Minds Radiology play a crucial role in connecting healthcare professionals worldwide. These collaborative efforts drive faster diagnostics, improve patient outcomes, and advance clinical research and education.
