How to make the best use of the Internet if you are a Musculoskeletal radiologist
Musculoskeletal imaging is increasingly popular among clinicians but also in the radiological community. Many radiologists discover the versatility of this field of imaging, mixing cool sports injuries with strange syndromes, tumours, metabolic syndromes, arthritis and a dash of degenerative disease. But many colleagues work in small departments, maybe they are the only radiologist trying to subspecialize somewhat in MSK. This field of imaging is not different from others; you need volume, and you need mentoring (read more about mentoring in my last article).
So, let's say you have decided to pursue happiness as an MSK radiologist, but you have a limited budget for congresses and limited time to travel to larger MSK departments. These conditions will make getting inspiration and knowledge from the internet necessary. Here are the most valuable internet resources for an MSK radiologist, in my humble opinion:
Lectures:
Vancouver Bone Squad
Register for the email alert and receive a link every week to an excellent Zoom lecture, recorded and available for seven days—free of charge!
One Case a Day, OCAD
This community is driven by all its colleagues and is a worldwide network. Sign up for the mail updates or just for the regular webinars, covering all kinds of topics—with familiar names that you could meet at your next congress. The OCAD recently started up an account on LinkedIn as well. And if you need some answers, post them in the mail group. You will get the opinion of the largest MSK community there. It's free of charge.
Berlin Case Viewer, Expert Talks
The BCV is a well-known initiative of Dr. Hermann from Berlin, publishing case collections with educational overlays. It's really worth checking out. This new initiative with expert lectures on diverse topics has an amazing line-up, and the discussion and cases really add to the value of each session. These lectures can be purchased, but buy a large package and save money—not expensive considering the educational value.
Telemedicine Academy, Barcelona
This resource offers courses (called fellowships) online, with a live teacher demonstrating lectures and cases. The videos are recorded and made available for a long time afterwards. This is close to a traditional course but with the advantages and disadvantages of being online—and somewhat pricey. The upside is the availability, and the lecturers are world-class.
Online Communities:
MSK Radiology, by Cristoph Agten
This is a large community with lectures, discussions, radiology resources and cases. Dr Agten shares knowledge and strategy, not only about diagnostics but also about how to report, how to increase your speed, how to avoid mistakes, and diagnostics and anatomy: some free content and some for purchase. Also, you can purchase a fellowship and be mentored closely based on your individual needs.
Radiology Seminars
This resource is also an online community, with an app for your tablet or smartphone, with postings and discussions of cases, but also lectures and case readings, dependent on a few very enthusiastic mentors. I predict that this community will grow, as they solve and discuss every day cases - every day! Also, this membership is paid for - but is an alternative to MSK Radiology.
Instagram accounts:
You can combine Instagram accounts depending of your area of interest. Here are just a few examples with remarkable content:
msk_mri
An amazing display of anatomy, diagnostics, with overlays and descriptions. The author of this account has recently published also a book on knee imaging.
advancedmsk
Beautiful cases from Sergio Viana from Brasil
msk.is.brilliant
Great cases and anatomy with overlays and explanations
radedasia
Dr. Ravi shares nice cases, and NB: he is also offering MRI Mini Fellowships, both online and onsite. Worth checking out!
Finally: My own Instagram page
Closing in on 400 cases, with educational snippets attached. Please help me to reach 20k followers!
Final remark: Many of these resources use the Collective Minds Clinical Collaboration for their cases. Collective Minds offers regular educational events and webinars, such as those with Dr. Imran Lasker, one of the founders of Radiology Seminars. If you teach, want to attract attention to your Instagram or LinkedIn account, or want to be visible on many channels, Collective Minds has functionality and powers to enhance your activities. Get in touch if you want to know more!
Roar Pedersen is the MSK Community Manager at the Collective Minds Platform and would love to discuss any possibilities for your course, lectures or social media activities with you.
